Happy Friday everyone!
Whew! What a long, but fantastic week I've just had :) It started in the beautiful Northern Alberta community of Peace River, followed by trips to Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Maple Ridge and back to the office in Calgary! I love my job! (and I gained the "mayor" title in FourSquare at the Park N Fly in Calgary from so many trips - LOL!)
Today's Fresh Look Fridays post is a quick one, since I've been spending the past 8 hours catching up on blog reading, Twitter, emails, voicemails, etc., etc. The Periodic Puzzle website is great for a few different uses in the Chemistry classroom:
1. Exploration of the periodic table based on a variety of parameters (atomic number, mass, boiling point, etc.)
2. Review of the aforementioned concepts
3. A puzzle-type game for students to self-test their knowledge of these concepts
I really like that this old-school Java applet has built-in answers. As in, it will let the student know if they got something correct (when in puzzle mode) and has a 'solve' button for when they get stuck.
This is a simple, but effective activity that works GREAT on a SMART Board in the class. As per usual, the most "bang for your buck" comes from getting as many students interacting with the concepts, so I really recommend using this as a small group activity.
That's all for today! Time to go home and visit with my cat before she disowns me for being gone so much! (oh yeah, and with my husband, too)
Vanessa :)
