Fresh Look Fridays -- First Voices - (20-08-2010)

What a wonderful time I'm having at Touch N Go 2010!! (#tng2010 for you all you newly converted tweeps out there!)

I love, love, LOVE hanging out with teachers who are excited about learning, kids and most of all, technology. The discussions of lesson plans, cute stories of "kids say the darndest things" and whimsical fantasies of the first stay of school almost make me want to re-enter the world of being a classroom teacher.

Almost.

I'll save a more expanded post for later next week when I have a bit more time, but I need to stress just how awesome it is that this collaborative group of teachers is sharing ideas and resources.

And so I have to steal copy share an excellent resource from a teacher at Touch N Go 2010 that I had never seen before: First Voices.

First_Voices

Essentially, this is an interactive website (and a Canadian one at that!) that lets students explore dialect and language of the Aboriginal peoples in Canada.  Explore the interactive map to see with cultural groups are identified in which regions, see a description of each group and hear sample words in their native language.

So simple, so easy to navigate, and a great supplementary resource to anyone studying the First Nations in Canada.

Just add it to my list of "Reasons Why I Love Touch N Go". Right behind "it's held in the bea-U-ti-ful Cowichan Bay region".

Happy weekend! I have a flight to catch :)

Vanessa

A classroom educator for 10 years, I’m now thrilled to be working full time training teachers and helping them integrate technology into their classrooms.

Originally from Calgary, I’m thrilled to be living and working in British Columbia and starting to get to know the fabulous educators in my new province.

I fully confess that I am a tech-geek, and thus always brought technology into the classroom with my students. As soon as I got my hands on my first SMART product – I was a convert – and never taught without one again! I was fortunate to be part of several technical trials with SMART – including the SMART Table, which I enjoyed using primarily with my Grade One students.

I spent some time as an Education Technology Consultant and developed my passion for bringing technology into the hands of kids & helping teachers to maximize the tech tools within their schools.

I also love sports, movies and am a classically trained singer.
