Child of the 90s - (14-04-2011)

Disclaimer: This post has nothing to do with technology in education.  It's intended to bring humour to those of us stuck with the recent blahs of winter as it returned with a lovely 20 cm snowfall last night...

I love my job.

No - I'm not trying to score some major brownie points with the big wigs in our company, although I wouldn't complain if that was an unintended outcome of this post. I truly enjoy what I get to do for a living.  Most days, I'd tell you that my favourite part of the job is when I get to hang out with educators at my workshops and discuss ways to integrate technology into their classrooms.

Yesterday was not one of those days.

Not because I suddenly had a change of heart regarding the joy I get working on SMART Board stuff with teachers, but rather because I was in the office, at my desk all day.  And sometimes, if you're lucky, something amusing happens that breaks up the day's worth of paperwork, emails, presentation creation and blogging.  Yesterday's distraction came in the form of reminiscing amongst those of us who grew up in the 90s, as we scrambled to share the opening refrains of as many cheesy 1990s (mostly 95-99) songs that shaped our teenage memories.

It started innocently enough with a comment by one of my coworkers, after another person referred to a person named Jimmy.  The aforementioned coworker replied with "Are you Jimmy Ray?".  And the 90s "music-off" was on.  It was highly amusing for 15 - 20 minutes, as we'd be working and suddenly the opening beats of such classics as "Chumbawumba", "S Club 7" or "Feels So Good" would come blaring from across one of the cubicles.

If you're also a child of the 90s, I invite you to walk down memory lane with me as I've compiled a short YouTube hodgepodge of classic late-90s music...I did not necessarily listen to each of these songs personally, but they definitely were around for my junior high/high school days!

For those of you shaking your head in disgust at this youngin', I've included one classic song for you as well.  You just need to scroll to the bottom to find it.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, get ready to step back into the era or snap bracelets, troll dolls, grunge, Fresh Prince of Bel Air (I know you're singing the theme song right now), "What-EV-er", VHS tapes and Backstreet Boys.  Enjoy! :)

First - the one that started it all (which oddly, was the only one that had "embedding disabled by request" on YouTube. 'Cuz I'm sure bloggers all over the world are anxious to post the official music video for "Are You Jimmy Ray" on their sites. Riiiight)

A classroom educator for 10 years, I’m now thrilled to be working full time training teachers and helping them integrate technology into their classrooms.

Originally from Calgary, I’m thrilled to be living and working in British Columbia and starting to get to know the fabulous educators in my new province.

I fully confess that I am a tech-geek, and thus always brought technology into the classroom with my students. As soon as I got my hands on my first SMART product – I was a convert – and never taught without one again! I was fortunate to be part of several technical trials with SMART – including the SMART Table, which I enjoyed using primarily with my Grade One students.

I spent some time as an Education Technology Consultant and developed my passion for bringing technology into the hands of kids & helping teachers to maximize the tech tools within their schools.

I also love sports, movies and am a classically trained singer.
